TI Introduces Industry-First Commercial CAN XL Transceiver for Next-Generation Industrial Networks

Aug 18,2026

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced the industry’s first commercially available CAN XL transceiver, designed to help industrial engineers address the rapidly increasing data demands of modern connected systems. The new TCAN6062 supports payloads of up to 2,048 bytes per frame and data rates of up to 20 Mbps, providing the high-performance communication required by humanoid robots, industrial robots, and human-machine interface (HMI) systems while maintaining the deterministic communication capabilities of the CAN ecosystem.

The TCAN6062 is backward-compatible with CAN FD and CAN Signal Improvement Capability (SIC), allowing engineers to transition to CAN XL without completely redesigning existing systems. This compatibility enables a gradual network upgrade strategy, helping design teams introduce higher bandwidth capabilities while preserving established CAN architectures.

The transceiver also supports the integration of communication layers within hybrid network architectures. Engineers can combine Ethernet and TCP/IP tunneling technologies to efficiently handle different types of traffic, including diagnostic information, sensor data, control commands, and over-the-air (OTA) updates on the same network.

Meeting the Growing Data Requirements of Industrial Systems

As industrial equipment becomes increasingly intelligent and interconnected, the volume of data generated and exchanged by machines continues to rise. Applications such as robotics and advanced automation require fast and deterministic communication to coordinate motion control, process sensor feedback, and manage diagnostic information.

Traditional CAN networks have long provided reliable and robust communication, but increasing data volumes are creating bandwidth limitations that can force engineers to make system-level compromises. The TCAN6062 addresses this challenge by providing a path toward higher-bandwidth networking while retaining the proven reliability and flexibility associated with CAN technology.

Although the CAN XL specification has been standardized for several years, TI is among the first companies to bring CAN XL transceiver hardware to the broader commercial market. With the TCAN6062, TI is turning the next-generation communication protocol into an accessible, ready-to-use solution for engineers developing future industrial systems.

“Industrial systems are becoming smarter and more connected, and that evolution is changing what engineers expect from their networks,” said Dwight Byrd, general manager of TI’s interface products. “Designers need greater data capacity, higher speeds and increased flexibility without compromising performance or reliability. The TCAN6062 CAN XL transceiver helps address these requirements, enabling the development of faster and more capable industrial systems.”

Simplifying Complex Network Designs

One of the key advantages of the TCAN6062 is its integrated SIC capability. In complex networks, the technology can reduce signal ringing by as much as 80%, helping engineers simplify validation and improve signal integrity in systems with a large number of connected nodes.

The device also offers broad input and output voltage compatibility along with protection of up to ±58 V, providing additional design flexibility for demanding industrial environments. These features make the TCAN6062 suitable for applications where robust communication, high bandwidth, and reliable operation are essential.

By combining high-speed CAN XL communication, backward compatibility, signal integrity improvements, and strong electrical protection, the TCAN6062 provides engineers with a practical way to evolve existing CAN networks toward higher-performance architectures without abandoning the reliability of the CAN ecosystem.
